I agree with quick_justice that the answer is racism. I’d add that OP, and anyone else interested, might consider the recent documentary: “Little Richard: The King and Queen of Rock & Roll” (American Masters: Season 37, Episode 5) which has great coverage of this time period and the relationship between race and music of the time.
