/u/MyBrotherSanta on We should’ve made flying it (or any other traitor’s rag) a hangable offence, is what the deal is.

The “deal with this flag” is the outrageous joy the country feels when it is removed. That is its legacy.

The traitor flag defeated, on April 14, 1865, America celebrated its permanent replacement at Fort Sumter, where just 4 years ago treason and canon fire raised the flag in the OP.

Americans were thrilled to see it go. Ten Steamer Ships far overfilled with soldiers and civilians came to join the celebration and many more people filled the streets.

One witness described viewing The Planter leading the Steamships. Let their graphic description help us remember how spectacular it is when The Confederate Flag is removed from a place:

“Another such motley crew will seldom if ever be seen. Gray-haired old men, whose wrinkles were lighted up with deep but quiet joy; middle-aged men and women, of every grade of color possible to Southern civilization … the wheelhouse, upon the top of which stood Robert Smalls, a prince among them, self possessed, prompt and proud, giving his orders to the helmsmen in ringing tones of command.”
